Submitting a book review

Want to submit a book review? At MedSoc we believe in the importance of providing a space for you to share your knowledge and opinions with the rest of the Australian community of medical practitioners. We are always interested in hearing your thoughts on particular textbooks or equipment, but recognise that writing reviews is a specialised skill that warrants proper recompense.

Please contact us for more information about eligibility for special offers, discounts or even free books in exchange for your opinions.

If you'd like to contribute a review, simply have a read of our suggested Dos and Don'ts to ensure that your contribution is as helpful and informative as possible. Please note that all material submitted will be examined by our editorial team before being posted online.

Do

  • Write an honest, first-hand review that accurately expresses your own thoughts and opinions on the usefulness of the book
  • Think carefully about how well the book communicates the specialist information involved to the intended reader
  • Consider what type of learning style the book caters best to – some people glean far more from a well-constructed diagram than a paragraph of rigorous scientific language
  • Outline the main ideas and major objectives of the book and evaluate how effectively these are accomplished
  • Comment on the soundness of both the methods used and those information sources referred to
  • Consider what the relative strengths and weaknesses of the book are in reference to other texts in the field
  • Be concise
  • Double-check your spelling and grammar
  • Give the book a rating out of 5

Don't

  • Include material irrelevant to the evaluation of the book
  • Submit a review that is less than 300 or more than 500 words – three or four paragraphs should be sufficient
  • Plagiarise material from other sources – we want YOUR opinion
