Once upon a time…
The Medical Society Bookshop was established by the Sydney University Medical Society Council in 1949 as a not-for-profit bookshop, owned and operated by the students of the University of Sydney. It was established nine years before the Co-op Bookshop, and was managed for its first forty years by Mrs Sheila Nicholas AO (Mrs. Nick, 1913 – 2004).
The bookshop developed its services during the mid–1990s, expanding to provide assistance and support to the broader medical community across Australia and New Zealand, as well as its traditional clientele in Sydney. This eventually led to the opening of a second retail outlet within Westmead Hospital in 1994.
Today, although we remain committed to our charitable principles, the Medical Society Bookshop is supported by a team of full-time professional staff dedicated to providing the best medical information services available in the country.
In addition to supplying information in hard-copy and electronic formats, our distribution division All Things Medical provides marketing and distribution services for local as well as US, UK and European publishers and instrument manufacturers.
ATM is proud to have published several books and also offers publishing, printing, marketing and distribution services to professional organisations keen to extend their reach across Australia and New Zealand.
